Wilkes Baseball Closes Spring Trip with Loss to Undefeated Catholic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wilkes University baseball team was unable to avoid the big inning as it closed out its trip to South Carolina with a 15-5 loss to undefeated Catholic University on Saturday morning.

The Colonels will return north with a 3-5 record.

Catholic recorded multiple runs in the first, third, sixth, and ninth to run away with the victory.

With Wilkes trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) walked and stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball after Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) walked and came into score after Keaton Allison (Aiken, SC/Aiken) reached on a passed ball after his third strike. Bryan Nifenecker (Amityville, NY/St. Dominic) followed with a walk to load the bases before Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) earned a walk of his own to bring home Reinert and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Patrizio came through again in the bottom of the fourth when he brought in Reinert on a groundout that cut the Cardinal's lead to 6-3.

Allison drove home Clymer with a sacrifice fly in the sixth before Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) finished the scoring with an RBI double that scored Reinert.

Jeremy Worlinsky (Swoyersville, PA/Holy Redeemer) tossed the first five innings for the Colonels, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits with five walks and one strikeout. Nicholas Poyer (Howell, NJ/Howell), Matt Maranca (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), and Andrew Indzonka (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) finished the final four innings on the hill.

Clymer, Reinert, Allison, and Gonzalez each had one hit.

Wilkes returns to the field for its home opener on Tuesday when it hosts Penn State-Brandywine for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game at Artillery Park.
