Errors Haunt Wilkes Baseball in Loss at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball team was haunted by six errors leading to eight unearned runs crossing the plate as it was defeated 10-4 at Muhlenberg College in non-conference play on Monday afternoon.

The Colonels are now 5-7 overall.

Muhlenberg opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with four runs on three hits and an error.

Wilkes responded in the top of the fourth when Vincent Uzzi (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) singled to bring home Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) after Champi reached on a one-out double before Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) hit a run-scoring single to plate Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) after Clymer reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a throwing error. The Colonels cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout from Dan Eicher (Massapequa Park, NY/Kellenberg) scoring Nick Pronti (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Wood-Ridge).

The Mules jumped out with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the bottom of the seventh.

Wilkes added a fourth run on a run-scoring walk from Anthony Favor (Woodbridge, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen).

Noah Durnin (Bath, PA/Northampton) went the first three innings on the mound for the Colonels, surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Francis Navatta (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville), Jeremy Yzeik (Waymart, PA/Holy Cross), Matt Maranca (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), and Nolan Ott (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville Area) went the final five innings without allowing an earned run.

Champi, Clymer, Uzzi, Capozzi, Pronti, Jack Hines (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne), Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg), and Eric Beideman (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) all had one hit.

Wilkes returns to the diamond on Friday when it heads to Misericordia for a 3:30 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game.
