Wilkes Baseball Takes Advantage of Marywood Miscues in Big Win
SCRANTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball team took advantage of five Marywood University miscues to come away with a 12-5 shortened win on Tuesday evening.
The Colonels improved to 7-9 overall with the victory.
Wilkes got on the board in the top of the second when
Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) hit a two-run home run bringing in
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) after he led off the inning with a walk.
The Pacers matched with a two run home run in the bottom of the inning.
The Colonels retook the advantage in the top of the fourth when
Alex Halladay (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) hit an RBI single down the left field line to bring home Capozzi. Capozzi reached on a single leading off the frame. Wilkes extended the lead to 5-2 when
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) scored on a wild pitch and
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) came across on an error by the shortstop.
Marywood cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth on two hits and an error.
Wilkes added two more runs in the top of the seventh when Champi scored on an error by the catcher and
Bryan Nifenecker (Amityville, NY/St. Dominic) singled to bring in
Vincent Uzzi (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and make the score 7-4.
The Colonels exploded for five runs in the top of the eighth on three hits and on error.
Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) led off the inning with a double to right center before coming in to score on a single from
Anthony Favor (Woodbridge, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen).
Nick Pronti (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Wood-Ridge) and Wing followed with walks to load the bases before
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) walked to bring in a run.
Dan Eicher (Massapequa Park, NY/Kellenberg) followed with a run-scoring groundout and Nifenecker finished the inning with a two-run single.
The Pacers scored the final run in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch.
Francis Navatta (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) earned his first collegiate win, going four innings surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Jeremy Yzeik (Waymart, PA/Holy Cross),
Matt Maranca (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), and
Noah Durnin (Bath, PA/Northampton) combined to allow just one run the rest of the way with two hits, six strikeouts, and one walk.
Champi (2-4, two runs), Capozzi (2-2, two runs, two RBI's, and Nifenecker (2-3, three RBI's) led the way for Wilkes at the plate.
The Colonels return to action on Thursday when they travel to Delaware Valley for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Freedom game.
