Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Falls to Mount Saint Mary

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University men's lacrosse team was outscored 8-1 in the second quarter as Mount Saint Mary College doubled up in a 16-8 win at Schmidt Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Colonels are now 5-4 this season.

Mount Saint Mary got on the board 1:12 into the game before Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) tied the score with 4:42 on the clock.

The teams again traded goals as the Knights took a 2-1 lead with 1:54 in the first but Nicholas Ruggiero (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) scored a buzzer beater with an assist from Matthew Bush (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) as the first quarter ended tied 2-2.

The scoring trend continued as Mount Saint Mary took a 3-2 lead 1:22 into the second quarter before Bush scored unassisted three minutes later. The Knights finished the first half registering seven consecutive goals to enter halftime with a 10-3 lead.

Ruggiero broke the slide with 10:29 on the clock in the third quarter before Mount Saint Mary tallied consecutive scores to go up 12-4 with just over seven and a half minutes showing.

Wilkes registered the next three goals as John Wink (Glenside, PA/Abington) scored unassisted to secure his 100th career point before John Luna (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) scored with an assist from Jeremy Kachel (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) and Ruggiero added another tally to cut the deficit to 12-7 with 11:29 remaining in the game.

The Knights put the game away with four goals in over three and a half minutes but Ruggiero notched another goal with 1:32 on the clock.

Ruggiero led the way with his four points while Bush added two points on a goal and an assist.

The Colonels open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play next Saturday when they travel to FDU-Florham for a 1:00 p.m. start.
