Mensah Sets Career Highs as Wilkes Men's Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Arcadia

WILKES-BARRE - Jones Mensah (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) set career highs with 14 kills and six blocks as the Wilkes University men's volleyball team battled Arcadia University in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) match Thursday night at the Marts Center falling 3-1 for the second time this season to the Knights. Set scores were 25-27, 25-15, 25-22, 25-13.

Wilkes fell to 6-19 overall and 2-8 in MAC contests while Arcadia improved to 14-10 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

The Colonels trailed by as many as five points early in the first set at 9-4 but battled back to take their first lead at 12-11. Wilkes extended the lead to 14-11 on Michael Henne (Northampton, Pa./Northampton)'s service run forcing the Knights to call a timeout. Arcadia then scored three points in a row to even the score and the teams traded points until the Knights pulled ahead 19-18 with two consecutive points. The Colonels went back ahead 21-20 after Mensah put away an overpass and Brian Schumacher (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) and Mensah combined for a block at the net on the next point. Wilkes extended its lead to 24-22 on a Knights attack error but Arcadia scored three straight points to take a 25-24 lead. Wilkes then used a service error and two attack errors by the Knights to earn the first set victory 27-25.

Arcadia raced out to an 11-4 lead in the second set and cruised to a 25-15 win to even the match at one set apiece.

The Knights built their lead to 12-8 in the third set but three straight points by the Colonels capped by a Mensah kill brought Wilkes back into contention. Arcadia's lead crept back out to three points at 19-16 forcing Wilkes to use a timeout and after another point by the Knights Wilkes scored three in a row capped by a Dylan Smith (York, Pa./Dallastown) service ace to bring the Colonels back to within one point at 20-19. It was Arcadia's turn to use a timeout to change momentum as they sided out to stop the Wilkes run. But the Colonels battled right back and tied the score at 21 on a Daniel Sales (Laflin, Pa./James M. Coughlin) kill. Arcadia then closed out the third set by gaining four of the next five points to win 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The visitors went on the first extended run of the fourth set with four-straight points to gain control at 10-5. From there the Knights continued their roll to finish off the match with a 25-13 set win.

Mensah finished the match with a .435 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 23 attacks with four errors. Joining Mensah in double-figure kills was Sales who finished with 11. He added 17 assists for his sixth double-double of the season and 13th of his career. Schumacher and Cole Hefner (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) each added five kills.
