Susquehanna Takes Non-Conference Doubleheader from Wilkes Softball

SELINSGROVE, PA – Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) extended her current hitting streak to six games as the senior collected three of the Wilkes University softball team's eight hits in a non-conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University Tuesday at Sassafras Field. The River Hawks took game one 9-1 in five innings before finishing off game two with a 7-1 victory.

Wilkes dropped to 17-13 overall while Susquehanna improved to 21-9.

The River Hawks opened the scoring in game one with three unearned runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning.

Wilkes answered with one run in the top of the second inning. Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) hit a one-out double to left center. Gambino then knocked a run-scoring single to right field with two outs to bring Brown across the plate to make the score 3-1.

Susquehanna then scored three runs in the bottom of the second and one each in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take go up 9-1 and take the game by the run rule.

Gambino went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Lady Colonels at the plate in game one. Brown and Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) added the other hits.

Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) (7-3) suffered the loss in the circle giving up nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits and four walks in 4.1 innings.

Susquehanna jumped out to a 7-0 lead after five innings of game two with two runs in the second, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth.

Welker knocked her fifth home run of the season with two outs in the top of the sixth to right field to put the Lady Colonels on the board. The junior brought her career home run total to 12 with the long ball.

Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg), Brown, and Gambino all went 1-for-3 in game two.

Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) (6-8) went six innings in the loss. She gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits and five walks.

The Lady Colonels return to the Ralston Athletic Complex tomorrow (Wednesday) after five consecutive road dates to face non-conference opponent Clarks Summit University in a nighttime doubleheader starting at 6:00 p.m.
