Staunton Twirls Gem as Wilkes Softball Splits with FDU-Florham on Senior Day
EDWARDSVILLE – On a day that was focused on the accomplishments of the senior class,
Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) tossed a complete game, giving up just one run on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts to improve to 8-3 on the season, leading the Wilkes University softball team to a 4-1 win in game one before the Lady Colonels fell in game two to Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) foe FDU-Florham 3-0 at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Wilkes is now 20-14 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
The Lady Colonels got on the board in the top of the first in game when
Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) led off with a double to left-center and scored when
Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) stepped up next with an RBI single, moving to second on a wild throw from the first baseman. Gibson was called out after
Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance) hit a groundball that clipped her heel, but Jumalon, who was credited with a fielder's choice, proceeded to steal second , move to third on a groundout, and score on
Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove)'s run-scoring single as Wilkes ended the inning with a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Colonels added on some insurance in the bottom of the third when
Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) came through with a clutch bases-loaded two-out two-run single, bringing home Jumalon and Staunton.
The Devils scored their lone run in the top of the fifth on two hits. FDU-Florham threatened in the top of the seventh by putting two runners on, but Staunton was able to slam the door.
Gibson led Wilkes in the first game, finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI. Jumalon (2-3, two runs scored) and Gambino (2-3, two RBI's) also earned multiple hits.
Game two was a different story, as a pitcher's duel was broken up by a three-run triple for the Devils in the top of the fourth.
Wilkes threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Staunton hit a one-out single to right-center and moved to third when
Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) hit a double down the left field line, however the Lady Colonels were unable to push a run across. Wilkes again put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh with the same result as FDU-Florham closed the game.
Podlesney went the distance in game two, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts to fall to 6-9 on the season.
Hits were much tougher to come by as Podlesney also led the way at the plate, finishing 2-for-3.
The Lady Colonels close out their non-conference schedule on Tuesday when they host the University of Scranton for a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader.
