Wilkes Baseball Completes Perfect MAC Freedom Weekend with Sweep of Delaware Valley
KINGSTON –
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) hit a walk-off single in game two of Sunday's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader against Delaware Valley University at Artillery Park as the Wilkes University baseball team completed a perfect 5-0 weekend in conference play to secure a place in the MAC Freedom postseason for the first time since 2009. The Colonels took game one 5-2 before Fischer's two-out game winning hit pushed the home team to a 9-8 win in game two.
After sweeping a three-game series from FDU-Florham on Friday and Saturday, the two wins Sunday pushed Wilkes to 12-5 in the conference securely holding down the third position in the standings. The Colonels are now 17-12 overall. Delaware Valley dropped to 8-18 overall and to 3-11 in the conference.
The Colonels struck early in game one with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) led off with a single down the right field line and then Fischer advanced him to second with a single to center.
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) then loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. That set the stage for
Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy)'s RBI single to right center that moved everyone ahead one base and scored Patrizio.
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) then provided a run-scoring fielder's choice on a ground ball to the second baseman that scored Fischer as Delaware Valley took the force out at second.
Delaware Valley got on the scoreboard with a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning. The Aggies then tied the game in the top of the fourth with a two-out run-scoring single.
Wilkes was able to regain its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs on three hits and one Delaware Valley error. Champi led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the Aggies third baseman. Cappozi then singled through the left side and Clymer reached on a bunt single to load the basses.
Alex Halladay (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) then knocked a two RBI single up the middle to bring in Champi and Capozzi. With one out
Tyler Walther (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) was able to bring in Clymer with a sacrifice fly to center.
Kyle Pokrinchak (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke ) (2-1) earned his second victory of the season by going the first five innings. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Zach Adamchick (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) worked a perfect sixth inning and
Nolan Ott (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville Area) came on to get the final three outs in the top of the seventh to earn his first career save.
Capozzi led the way at the plate in game one going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Patrizio also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a run.
The Colonels mirrored game one with a two-run first inning in game two. Patrizio led off with a walk and then Fischer was hit by a pitch. The two then executed a double steal to move to second and third and Champi brought them in with a two-run single up the middle.
The Aggies got one run back in the second inning with a single, stolen base and then another single.
Another leadoff walk started a two-run second inning for the Colonels.
Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) was issued the free pass and then
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) singled to center and advanced to second on the throw to third which Reinert beat out.
Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) then provided a two RBI knock up the middle to score Reinert and Wing putting Wilkes ahead 4-1.
Wilkes would add four more runs in the third inning on three hits and two errors. Champi reached on an infield single to lead off the inning and Capozzi singled down the left field line. Champi then advanced to third on Clymer's fly out to right and
Vincent Uzzi (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) walked to load the bases. Reinert then picked up an RBI with a walk that forced Champi in. Wing followed with a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Capozzi to score. Malatesta then reached base on a fielding error by the third baseman and Uzzi came into score on a throwing error by the same player. After a pitching change, Patrizio hit a run-scoring single through the left side to plate Reinert and make the score 8-1.
Delaware Valley got two runs back in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth but Wilkes took an 8-5 lead into the top of the seventh inning. There, the Aggies scored three two-out runs to even the game at 8-8 before
Andrew Indzonka (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) entered to earn the final out of the inning with a strikeout.
Bryan Nifenecker (Amityville, NY/St. Dominic) led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and
Jack Hines (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) entered to pinch run for him. Reinert then reached on a bunt single. Wing tried to advance the runners with a bunt of his own but the Aggies were able to get the lead runner out. With two outs, Patrizio walked to move Reinert to third and Wing to second and then Fischer stepped to the plate for his heroics. He knocked the first pitch of the at bat to center field allowing Reinert to come across the plate to score the winning run.
Champi was the lone Colonel with two hits in game two as he went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI's and one run.
Matthew Konikow (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) went the first five innings giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Adamchick worked a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts and
Matt Maranca (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) went 0.2 innings allowing three earned runs on two hits and three walks with one strikeout. Indzonka earned his first career win by getting the final out of the top of the seventh with a strikeout.
Next up for the streaking Colonels is a MAC Freedom series on Friday and Saturday with DeSales University. Wilkes will head to Center Valley, Pa. for a nine-inning game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before hosting the Bulldogs at Artillery Park for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday for Senior Day.
