Wilkes Women's Volleyball Wins Twice on Saturday

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team won the bookend matches of their three today at Lycoming College. They started the day at 10:00 a.m. by sweeping Clarks Summit University 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22).

Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) led the offense with 14 kills, followed closely by Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) with 11. Freshman Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) set up most of the Colonels points with her 30 assists. On the defensive end, Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) recorded 22 digs while Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) tallied three blocks. Wilkes held a slight edge in blocks thanks to Christie Challenger (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) and Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) each adding a pair of their own.

The Colonels had a much tougher test in their second match against the Lycoming Warriors. After a tightly contested first set that Lycoming won 26-24, the Warriors faced little resistance in the next two sets. They cruised to a 3-0 swept after taking the next two sets 25-10 and 25-15 respectively.

After the defeat, Wilkes had a quick turnaround to try and end the day on a positive note when they faced off against Penn College. This time the Colonels were doing the sweeping as they defeated the Wildcats in straight sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-19). Wilkes made quick work of Penn College thanks to 13 aces, four of which came from Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) and another two by Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) and Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North). Huffman also led the way with 18 assists while Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) registered six kills.

With the victories, Wilkes improves to 3-1 after the opening weekend of matches. Their next contest will also be their home opener on Tuesday night against Penn State Brandywine in the Marts Center at 7:00 p.m.
