Mikovich Ties School Record as Wilkes Women's Volleyball Improves to 11-4
CAMDEN, NJ –
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) tied Wendy O'Conner's single-match school record of 29 kills in leading the Wilkes University women's volleyball team to a pair of victories Saturday during a tri-match hosted by Rutgers-Camden. Wilkes defeated Brooklyn College 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-18) in the first match and then Mikovich tied the record in a 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 25-16) victory over the host Rutgers-Camden to end the day.
With the pair of non-conference victories, Wilkes improved to 11-4 overall this season to surpass its win total from a season ago. Brooklyn dropped to 8-3 overall and Rutgers-Camden fell to 3-10 with the losses.
Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) and Mikovich were strong in the first match of the afternoon against Brooklyn, leading the Colonels to their team-high hitting percentage of .306 for the season. Ferrier hit .462 and tied her season-high of 14 kills. Mikovich hit .423 with 13 kills and also added 13 digs and a career-high five service aces.
Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) and
Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) led the defense with eight digs and Huffman added 34 assists.
Sierra Smith (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) matched Mikovich with five aces.
Wilkes took the match over the Bulldogs in straight sets behind the strength of 15 aces.
The day's second match against Rutgers-Camden featured a phenomenal performance by Mikovich. She laced 29 kills to tie O'Conner's record which has stood alone since 1993. The junior also tied a season-high with 24 digs to record her ninth double-double of the season. Mikovich hit .400 and added three blocks and two aces.
Huffman dished out 42 assists and added seven digs and three blocks to help down the Scarlet Raptors in four sets. A nine to two advantage in blocks was a big factor in the Colonels victory.
Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) was the strongest at the net with five blocks and she added eight kills. Ferrier had eight kills and a season-high three aces.

Shayna Fehrle (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) contributed 11.
The Colonels look for their first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom victory of the season when they host Delaware Valley University at the Marts Center on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
