Wilkes Field Hockey Doubles Up Eastern 6-3 to Open Conference Play
EDWARDSVILLE – On the day that head coach
Sara Myers was honored for reaching the 100 win plateau as leader of the program, the Wilkes University field hockey team doubled up Eastern University by a 6-3 final to open up Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels improved to 5-3 overall and now stand at 1-0 in conference.
Wilkes wasted no time taking the first lead as
Cheyenne Mazzocca (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) scored her second goal of the season a mere 37 seconds into the contest.
Eastern tied the score in the 20
th minute as both teams entered halftime with one goal.
The Colonels began to pull away in the second half with three straight goals. In the 43
rd minute,
Amber Grohowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) played the ball into the circle, which bounced around before settling on
Maddie Kelley's (Dallas, PA/Dallas) stick allowing her to shoot to the lower left corner past the Eagles goalkeeper to make the score 2-1 Wilkes.
Mackenzie Sweeney (Millville, PA/Millville) registered her first career goal in the 58
th minute as she sprinted up the left sideline and bulldozed her way through the circle and shot it short side into the cage for the 3-1 advantage.
Only 47 seconds later, the Colonels were awarded a penalty stroke which was converted by
Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) for a 4-1 lead.
The Eagles cut the deficit with an unassisted tally in the 62
nd minute, but
Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) regained the three-goal advantage with a score of her own in the 64
th minute.
In the 66
th minute, Eastern again cut the deficit to two goals at 5-3, however, Wilkes did not let it stand for long as Sweeney scored an almost carbon-copy of her first goal to reach the final score in the 68
th minute.
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made five saves in the cage for the Colonels to back the strong offensive effort.
Wilkes out-shot the Eagles 17-14, holding a 10-8 advantage in shot that hit their target. The Colonels also held an 8-4 lead in penalty corners.
Wilkes returns to the field on Tuesday when they host the University of Scranton for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
