Wilkes Field Hockey Records Second Consecutive Shutout in 3-0 Win at Keystone
LA PLUME, PA – For the second straight game the Wilkes University field hockey team recorded a shutout of its opponent. This time the Colonels held host Keystone College scoreless in a 3-0 victory in non-conference action late Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory Wilkes improved its record to 2-1 overall this season while Keystone dropped to 0-2.
The Colonels wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as
Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) connected on her first goal of the season just 4:42 into the game.
Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) provided the assist on the play after Wilkes earned the first penalty corner of the contest.
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) kept the Giants off the scoreboard in the first half when the senior goalkeeper made two saves within a 30 second span with under 10 minutes until the break.
Wilkes stretched its lead to two goals when
Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) scored her first goal in the Navy and Gold unassisted at the 48:26 mark.
The Colonels then added a second insurance goal with just under 14 minutes remaining in the game when
Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored her third goal of the season. Gayoski assisted on the penalty corner pass for her third assist of the year.
Kendra made her fourth save of the game with just over six minutes remaining before exiting as
Mya Zak (South Wales, NY/Holland) entered to complete the shutout effort in goal for the Colonels.
Wilkes controlled much of the play, especially in the second half. For the game the Colonels outshot the Giants 24-8 including 19-4 in the second 35 minutes. Shots on goal were 17-4 and Wilkes also held a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners. Megan Novak made 12 saves for Keystone.
Cheyenne Mazzocca (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) led the Colonels offensive attack with six shots and Shiplett followed with five.
Head coach
Sara Myers recorded the 99
th win of her Wilkes coaching career. She will look to lead the Colonels to her 100
th victory when the team returns to Schmidt Stadium Saturday for their home opener against Widener University at 5:00 p.m.
