Wilkes Women's Soccer Shutout by Ithaca 1-0 in Season Opener
ITHACA, NY – The Wilkes University women's soccer team lost Wednesday afternoon 1-0 on the road at Ithaca College. This was the Colonels first game of the season after Friday night's match was postponed due to poor field conditions.
With the win, Ithaca improves to 3-0.
The Bombers were the attacking team in the first half as they held a 5-1 shots advantage over the Colonels, with four of those shots being put on net. Ithaca kept up the pressure with two corner kicks while Wilkes had none.
The continued pressure paid off for the Bombers when Ally Christman's cross found the foot of Shoshana Bedrosian, who slipped it by Colonels goalkeeper
Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) for her fifth goal of the season at the 37:50 mark of the first half.
Wilkes had an early opportunity in the second half when they took a corner kick 2:26 into the half, but they were unable to get off a shot.
Delfina Bracchi (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) tried to tie the game on a header at the 59:05 mark but she was turned away by Bombers goalkeeper Sara Jakobsze. Wilkes had one more chance with under five minutes to play when
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) fired a shot on net, but it was saved by Jakobske.
The Colonels could only manage two shots on goal while Stanley made four saves to keep Wilkes in it.
Wilkes (0-1) returns to action Saturday, September 8th at 12:00 p.m. for their home opener at Schmidt Stadium when they face off against Marywood University.
