Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Erases Four Goal Deficit
HERSHEY, PA – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team scored six times in the third period to shock the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Wednesday night. The Dutchmen led 4-0 after two periods but were unable to hold off the Colonels who improve to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference.
The victory also keeps Wilkes in first place ahead of Lebanon Valley in the Middle Atlantic Conference standings as the Colonels sit at 4-0 and the Dutchmen 2-1-1.
The Dutchmen scored the only goal of the opening period around the halfway mark when Brian Hovanec put one past the Wilkes goaltender to give the home team a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Penalties were costly for the Colonels in the second period as the Dutchmen converted on three power play opportunities to push the lead to 4-0. The home team scored at the 4:03, 9:49 and 14:25 marks to give themselves a healthy advantage heading into the final period.
That is when the flood gates opened for the Colonels as
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) started the barrage just 22 seconds into the third to put his team on the scoreboard.
The Dutchmen responded quickly as they scored their fifth goal of the contest just over two minutes later to increase the lead back to four at 5-1.
Brendan Logan (Matthews, NC) found a good time to score his first two goals for the navy and gold as he cut the deficit in half at 5-3 with 12:53 remaining in the game.
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) got his team leading 11
th goal of the season, unassisted, less than a minute and a half later to shrink the margin to only one goal.
About four minutes later, Barrow found
Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/) to knot the game up at 5-5 with 7:46 left in the contest.
Lebanon Valley would make matters worse by taking a penalty of their own at the 14:40 mark which gave the Wilkes strong power play unit a chance to give the Colonels their first lead of the night.
A little more than halfway into the power play Fea and Barrow set up
Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) for the game-winning goal as the Colonels completed the unbelievable comeback to stun the Dutchmen 6-5.
Barrow had a four-point night with a goal and three assists while Kuipers and Logan had three-point nights to lead the navy and gold. Wilkes held a 13-5 shots on goal advantage in the final period and 34-24 on the night.
Lebanon Valley will have revenge on their minds as these two teams take the ice again at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Toyota SportsPlex.
