Comeback Pushes Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey into UCHC Lead Following 4-4 Tie with Elmira
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team scored three third period goals, finished off by
Brendan Logan's (Matthews, NC) tally with the goaltender pulled, to force overtime in an eventual 4-4 tie against Elmira College Monday afternoon in a key United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) meeting at the Toyota SportsPlex.
The Colonels earned the extra point toward the UCHC standings when
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) scored early into the extra 3-on-3 overtime period and in doing so propelled Wilkes into first place with 26 conference points at the conclusion off 11 UCHC games, two points clear of Utica College.
Wilkes stands at 12-4-1 overall following the tie and at 8-2-1 (26 points) in the UCHC. Elmira moved to 9-8-1 overall and 7-3-1 (22 points) in the conference.
The Soaring Eagles opened the scoring 3:45 into the first period on a tick-tack-toe passing play that was finished off by Connor Powell. Wilkes responded at the 6:25 mark when
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) put away a pass from Barrow on the power play to even the score at 1-1.
Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) also picked up an assist on Fea's seventh goal of the season.
Neither team could gain the advantage through remainder of the first period. The game stayed tied for the majority of the second as well until
Angelo Marquart (Hackettstown, NJ/) took a five-minute major-disqualification penalty at the 16:47 mark. Elmira wasted little time in capitalizing as Marty Kapoian scored the power play goal with 17:22 showing on the second period clock. Araujo nearly tied the game shorthanded before the second period ended but Gennaro Anzevino made a nice save on the breakaway.
Wilkes was able to kill off the remainder of the five-minute man advantage for Elmira as
Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) made two saves and the Colonels defense came up large with three blocks. Unfortunately, Wilkes went right back to the box and Elmira started another power play opportunity in the third period. Gordon made two more saves and
Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/) and
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/) each blocked a shot as the Colonels killed off the minor penalty.
Following a Soaring Eagles penalty the Colonels were able to find the net with three seconds left on their own power play as Flynn scored his 11
th of the season at the 6:18 mark. Flynn raced through center ice and worked his way to the right side of the Elmira zone where he fired a shot past the goaltender. Gordon was credited with the assist on the play for his first career point.
Nick Ford then put the visitors back ahead 3-2 with a power play strike less than two minutes later.
Araujo had the answer just 12 seconds later as he tied the game at 3-3 at the 8:19 mark with his eighth goal.
Danny Reidel (Wayne, NJ/) and
Ryan Solomon (Murray, UT) both picked up their first point of the season with assists on the play.
Ford found the net again for the Soaring Eagles as they took their fourth one-goal lead of the contest 14:26 into the third.
With time ticking down to under two minutes left until the end of regulation Wilkes pulled Gordon off the ice for the extra skater and Logan scored the equalizer with 1:35 left for his third goal of the season. Solomon and Erickson assisted on the play that forced overtime at 4-4.
Gordon made four saves in the five-minute 5-on-5 overtime period to earn Wilkes the tie. He made 30 saves in the game, the second-most of the season for the freshman, to move his record to 10-4-1 in the crease for the Colonels. Wilkes did not register a shot on goal in the overtime but
Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY/) had a shot attempt blocked and Fea had a high-quality scoring chance go just wide. Anzevino made 24 saves for Elmira.
Araujo with one goal and one assist and Solomon with two assists were the multi-point scorers in the game for the Colonels while Fea and Solomon finished with a plus-two rating. Flynn led the way for Wilkes in the faceoff circle as he won 22-of-33 attempts.
Under UCHC rules the game continued with a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period for standings points. Barrow netted the game-ending goal with less than a minute off the clock as Wilkes earned two points toward the conference standings. Flynn forced a turnover by the Soaring Eagles in their own end that led to Barrow's goal. Elmira was credited with one point for the 3-on-3 loss.
The Colonels return to the ice with a seven-game unbeaten streak Friday night when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a UCHC meeting with Chatham University at 7:10 p.m.
