Wilkes Men's Volleyball Dominates at Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, NY – Tyler Pittsman (Jefferson Twp, PA/North Pocono) finished with 11 kills and Jones Mensah (Philadelphia, PA/Central) added nine as the Wilkes University men's volleyball team breezed by the College of Mount Saint Vincent on the road Wednesday night in non-conference action. The Colonels swept the Dolphins 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-17).

With the victory Wilkes improved to 2-0 on the young season while Mount Saint Vincent dropped to 0-3.

The Colonels were all over the Dolphins from the outset of the first set, gaining a 16-2 advantage following a 13-point run with Ethan Speicher (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) at the service line. Speicher had five of his match-high six service aces during the run. Mount Saint Vincent had a six-point run of its own to close the score to 20-11 but the two sides traded points until Pittsman put away a kill to end the first set 25-15 in favor of the Colonels.

With the second set tied 2-2, Wilkes scored five in a row to go ahead 7-2. In the run of points Pittsman had two kills while Mensah added one of his own and Everett Fritz (Ringtown, PA/Hazleton Area) provided an ace. The Colonels would slowly build their lead during the rest of the set and scored the final four points to win 25-12.

Mount Saint Vincent led early on in the third set after scoring the first three points and continued to lead by three at 9-6. Two kills by JD Kirby (Eastport, NY/Eastport-South Manor) cut the deficit to one at 9-8 before the Dolphins scored the next point. Then a three-point run on a Speicher kill, Daniel Sales (Laflin, PA/James M. Coughlin) ace and a block by Speicher and Kirby handed Wilkes its first lead of the third set at 11-10. Mount Saint Vincent would score the following point but then Wilkes scored the next seven to blow the set open. Mensah started the key run with a kill and Kirby followed with two aces. Pittsman then collected two consecutive kills and Speicher and Mensah combined for a block as the score stood at 18-11. The Dolphins cut the lead down to four-points twice but Wilkes scored the final two on a kill by Kirby and another by Sales to win the set 25-17 and sweep the match.

Sales directed the offense to a .261 hitting percentage with 28 assists while also adding four digs and three aces. Kyle Price (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) led the Wilkes defense with six digs. Cole Hefner (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) finished third on the team with five kills. Wilkes held Mount Saint Vincent to a -.149 hitting for the match.

The Colonels return to the Marts Center to host their first tri-match of the season on Saturday, January 26. Wilkes will face Elizabethtown College at 11:00 a.m. before finishing the day against Keuka College.
