Wilkes Men's Swimming Tops Marywood 153-73
SCRANTON, PA – The Wilkes University men's swimming team cruised to a victory over Marywood University on Saturday afternoon to tie the program record for wins since the reinstatement at seven as they now stand at 7-2 overall.
Results
Jared Byrne (Pequea, PA/Penn Manor) and Trey Harloff (Apex, NC/Apex Friendship) led the navy and gold with three wins apiece with two coming in individual events.
Wilkes began the meet by winning the 200 Medley Relay with the team of Jacob Wessner (Auburn, PA/Blue Mountain), Harloff, Justin Burda (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and Nick Martino (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) finishing in 1:43.66 to earn their team 11 points.
Byrne would pick up his first win of the day, in record fashion, as he broke the school record for the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 10:39.00 (previously 10:48.92). The Colonels would take the top three spots in the race as Timothy Sechler-Stone (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) and Daniel Micozzi (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) finished in second and third respectively for the trio to earn their team a total of 16 points.
Wilkes took the first four races of the meet as Tyler Weatherby (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) followed by taking the 200 Freestyle (1:56.10) before Martino won the 100 Backstroke (59.33).
Harloff captured his first of two individual wins in the 200 Fly with a time of (2.06.68) before winning again in the 100 Freestyle (50.72), edging out his teammate Martino (51.01).
The Colonels went two, three, four in the 50 Freestyle as Joseph Antolick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill), Sechler-Stone and Wessner added to their team's lead.
After a couple second-place finishes from Shane Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) (200 Backstroke) and Connor Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) (200 Breaststroke), Ziyad Khafagy (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) bested his teammate Connor Aspey in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5.36.62.
Byrne finished the day with a pair of wins, first in the 100 Fly (57.42) and then as part of the 400 Freestyle Relay team with Burda, Khafagy and Antolick.
Wilkes will aim to set the program record for wins when it heads to rival King's next Saturday, February 2nd for a 1:00 p.m. meet.
