Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Blanks King's for a Second Time

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's ice hokcey team shutout King's College 4-0 as it used three third period goals to pull away for the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory at the Toyota SportsPlex Thursday night. Wilkes swept the first season of games against its cross-town rival as the Colonels won the first meeting 3-0 back in November.

Wilkes improved to 14-5-1 overall and to 10-3-1 in the UCHC with 32 points to sit atop the 10-team conference. The Colonels also lead the MAC with a 6-1-0 record. King's dropped to 1-20-0 (overall), 1-13-0 (UCHC) and 0-7-0 (MAC).

Wilkes had the better of the play in the first period as it held a 10-3 lead in shots on goal but the game went to the first intermission scoreless.

Jivan Sidhu (Burnaby, BC/) nearly broke the tie five minutes into the second period but he hit the post after making a charge through the center of the Monarchs defense. Brendan Logan (Matthews, NC) was able to put the Colonels ahead 1-0 when he fired a shot past Brandon Daigle in the King's net at the 8:26 mark of the second period. Logan now has five goals in eight games this season. Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/) and Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) assisted on the play.

The score remained 1-0 until 4:08 into the third period when Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) scored his ninth of the year off assists from Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ) and Logan.

Barrow made it 3-0 two seconds after the second of two consecutive Colonel power plays ended with his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) and Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) assisted on the goal at the 10:27 mark.

Wilkes added its third goal of the final period on the penalty kill when Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/) found the net at the 19:06 mark. It was the seventh goal of the season and the fourth shorthanded for Erickson. Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY/) assisted on the play as he had opportunities in front of Daigle before Erickson put away the loose puck.

Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) earned his 12th win of the year as he stopped all 11 of the shots he faced. Daigle made 43 saves for the Monarchs as Wilkes held a 47-11 shots on goal advantage.

The Colonels penalty kill was strong as they held the Monarchs scoreless on five opportunities and scored once shorthanded.

Wilkes held a 37-31 lead in the faceoff circle with Schell winning 12 of his 17 opportunities. He also led Wilkes with nine shots.

The Colonels return to the ice Saturday for their final non-conference game of the year as they face Bryn Athyn on the road at 7:00 p.m. Wilkes defeated Bryn Athyn 4-2 at the Toyota SportsPlex earlier this season.
