SCRANTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University field hockey team held a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, but it was unable to maintain the advantage as Marywood University escaped with a 3-2 win in double-overtime in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Colonels are now 8-7 overall.

Wilkes got on the board in the ninth minute when Amber Grohowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) played a long pass into the box that was put home by Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood).

The Colonels added a second goal in the 12th minute when Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) tapped in a hard pass from Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail).

Marywood cut the deficit with a score in the 43rd minute.

Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) rang a shot off the post in the 49th minute, which was followed 90 seconds later by the tying goal from Marywood.

Kacee Diehl (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton) helped keep the score even as the fourth quarter wound down when she made a defensive save in the 57th minute.

Stepanski made the first substantial play in the first overtime, making a defensive save in the 63rd minute.

In the 67th minute, Wilkes found itself with four straight shot attempts but was unable to score the game-winner.

Baldwin beat the goalkeeper in the 72nd minute but her shot was stopped by a defender behind the goalkeeper.

Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) came inches away from ending the game in the second overtime, hitting the post in the 73rd minute.

The Pacers scored the game-winner in the 80th minute to end the contest.

Vanessa Damgaard (Elysburg, PA/Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical School) made nine saves in the cage for the Colonels.

Wilkes returns to the field on Saturday when it will host Stevens Institute of Technology for a 5:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest, the first ever conference game between the two schools.
