Mikovich Sets School All-Time Kills Record as Wilkes Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Wilkes University Colonels women's volleyball team traveled to Jersey City Saturday for a tri-match against host New Jersey City and Baruch College.

The Colonels (12-13) swept New Jersey City (6-14) in straight sets 32-30, 25-17. 25-16 before falling to Baruch (15-5) in straight sets 24-26, 20-25, 19-25. Senior opposite hitter
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) broke the Colonels all-time kills record in the match against New Jersey City, surpassing the previous mark set by Marissa Harrison of 1329 kills.

Against New Jersey City, the Colonels found themselves down 6-9 before going on a 4-1 run. New Jersey responded with a 5-2 run of their own, which Wilkes followed up with an identical run to leave the match at 19 apiece. New Jersey City replied with a 4-0 run of their own, before Wilkes struck back with a 5-1 run to force extra points in the set. The teams went back and forth until the Colonels finally clinched the set 32-30 to set the tone for the match.

The back and forth continue until midway through the second set at 13-12 Colonels, when Wilkes pulled away with an 8-2 run that gave them an advantage they would not relinquish. Wilkes took an early 10-6 lead in the second set before a 6-2 New Jersey City run pulled the teams even at 12 apiece. A trio of kills from Mikovich and a service ace from junior defensive specialist
Kristie Najdek (Bethpage, NY/Island Trees) sparked yet another decisive run, a 10-2 run that would put the Colonels in prime position to claim the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.

Mikovich led all Colonels with 22 kills and two blocks in her record-breaking performance. Sophomore setter
Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) had 31 assists to fuel the Colonels offense, while three Colonels had two service aces each. Senior defensive specialist
Julie Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) had 18 digs to lead the squad in the first match of the afternoon.Â

The Colonels return home Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. for Pediatric Cancer Night. They face DeSales in a MAC Freedom showdown at the Marts Center to start a seven-match home stretch to conclude their regular season.
