EDWARDSVILLE – In a match played entirely in the rain, the Wilkes University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with cross-town rival King's College Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes moved to 6-6-3 overall and 1-3-1 in MAC Freedom matches while King's stands 11-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference contests.
King's opened the scoring in the match when Alastair Dinnan took a through ball from Pat Holton inside the box and deposited the shot past the Colonel goalie inside the right post to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead just 2:41 in.
Wilkes responded :53 later as
Nicholas Gaydos (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) ripped a shot that deflected off a King's defender and into the goal tying the game at 1-1.
The Colonels looked to take their first lead late in the first half, but a shot from
Marc Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, NY/Plesantville) just inside the box was saved by a sprawling Monarch goalie Connor McKeown who was able to get his hand on the ball to keep the score tied at the break.
Wilkes had another scoring chance in the 56
th minute of the second half when
Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) took a cross from
Danny McGinley (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) but was whistled for offside as his shot beat the Monarch keeper. The Colonels continued the counter attack with another great opportunity to take the advantage in the 65
th minute, but
Seth Fowler's (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon) slide across the crease of the goal barely missed a
Gabriel Nieves (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland Senior) cross keeping the game tied at 1.
King's best chance in the second frame came in the 80
th minute as Wilkes' goalie
Zach Tone's (Easton, PA/Easton Area) clear found the foot of Fabio Massa from 10 yards out, but the sophomore made the save to keep the ball out of the net.
Each team traded corner kicks with under five minutes left, but neither could muster the game-winning tally as the match went into the extra session.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Bentz looked to end the game early in the second overtime frame, but his diving shot in front of the goal was block by a King's defender as the game continued to remain tied at 1.
