First Quarter Goal Lasts to Lift Misericordia Over Wilkes Field Hockey
EDWARDSVILLE – Misericordia's Allie Bianco deflected in a shot from Kayla Pogash early in the first quarter as the visiting Cougars made the lone goal stand the rest of the game on way to a 1-0 victory over Wilkes University Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium.
Wilkes concludes regular season play with a 10-9 overall record standing 3-4 in MAC Freedom games. Misericordia improved to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in league games. Wilkes was eliminated from the MAC Freedom tournament with the defeat while Misericordia earned the fourth seed in next week's upcoming tournament.
In a back and forth game throughout, Bianco's goal proved to be the game-winner as she deposited the ball into the back of the net at the 11:35 mark of the first frame.
Wilkes had several chances throughout the third and fourth quarters to score the equalizer, but every time the Cougars were up to the task of making the save or clearing the ball out of the Colonels offensive end.
Wilkes held an 8-6 shot advantage while garnering eight penalty corners to Misericordia's six attempts.
Vanessa Damgaard (Elysburg, PA/Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical School) finished with three saves in net for Wilkes.
Wilkes will now await word on a possible ECAC postseason tournament berth in the next week.
