Kelley and Berryman Help Wilkes Women's Basketball to Road Victory

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ – Junior Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Wilkes University women's basketball team won 46-35 in a non-conference game at Centenary University (NJ) Tuesday night.

With the victory Wilkes improved to 2-0 on the young season while Centenary dropped to 1-1.

Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) put the Colonels on the scoreboard with a three pointer to cut into the Cyclones early 4-0 lead. Macy Berryman (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain East) then drilled a three to give the Colonels their first lead at 6-4. After a five-point run by Centenary put the home team back ahead 9-6, Kendra Smith (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) made a layup and then hit a jumper to put Wilkes back ahead 10-9 with 1:59 left in the first quarter. One Berryman free throw brought the score to 11-9 in favor of the Colonels at the end of the first 10 minutes.

Three layups by Kelley in the first 3:14 of the second quarter helped push the Colonels advantage to 19-11. Kelley then converted two from the free-throw line to give Wilkes its first double-digit lead of the game with 6:02 left in the half. Berryman connected on a three to put the Colonels ahead by 17 at 30-13 with 2:03 showing on the clock. A Gabby Smicherko (Edwardsville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) layup provided Wilkes with its final bucket during a 21-6 quarter that stretch their lead to 32-15 at halftime.

A cold shooting third quarter for Wilkes saw the Navy and Gold only muster three points but the Cyclones could only cut the lead down to nine at 35-26 heading to the fourth quarter.

Two quick buckets by Centenary in the fourth cut the lead to five before Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) connected from deep to put Wilkes back up 38-30 with eight minutes left. The home team again cut the lead to five with 3:37 remaining. The Colonels would then proceed to go 6-for-8 over the final 2:27 to seal the game at the free-throw stripe and did not allow Centenary to score.

Berryman also finished with 10 points and Smith added six for the Colonels. Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and Horton pulled in six rebounds and Alfano tied her career-high with four steals.

Wilkes returns to the court to face host Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday, November 16 at 3:00 p.m. as part of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic. The Colonels will either play Elizabethtown College or William Smith College on Sunday.
