Wilkes Wrestling Claims 28-12 Win Over Alvernia
READING, PA – The Wilkes University wrestling team earned wins in six of ten bouts including four extra point victories on way to a 28-12 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory over host Alvernia University Wednesday night. The match marked the first dual for Alvernia who started its wrestling program this season.
Wilkes improved to 2-0 overall on the year following the road conference win.
Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary) began the match with a dominant 7-1 decision at 125-pounds to give Wilkes an early 3-0 lead it would never relinquish. At 133-pounds
Jack Bauer (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) followed with an 11-1 major decision, the first of four extra point victories for the Colonels, to extend the advantage to 7-0.
Dylan O'Connor (Somerset, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) added a 4-2 decision at 141-pounds as the Colonels led 10-0 after three bouts.
After Alvernia claimed its first points with a decision win at 149-pounds, Wilkes responded as
Liam Flaherty (Needmore, PA/Southern Fulton) pinned Gavin Hollingsworth in the third period after trailing 5-3 at the end of the second.
John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) (174-pounds) and
Brady Mitchell (Bowdoin, ME/Mount Ararat) (184-pounds) rounded out Wilkes' extra point winners both taking falls in their respective matches.
Wilkes returns to the mat Saturday when the Colonels travel to Doylestown, Pa. for a double dual hosted by Delaware Valley University. Wilkes wrestles host Delaware Valley at 4:30 p.m. before a match against York College (Pa.) at 6:00 p.m.
