Wilkes Men's Basketball Wins Championship as Pecorelli and Mullins Pass 1,000 Career Points

ARLINGTON, VA – Rob Pecorelli (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) and Mark Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) each surpassed the 1,000 career point milestone in leading the Wilkes University men's basketball team to the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament championship as the Colonels outscored Montclair State University 96-91 Sunday in the Converse Family Fieldhouse on the campus of Marymount University.

Pecorelli was named to the All-Tournament team and earned MVP honors. He tied his career-high of 33 points to bring his total to 1,020 career points. Mullins was also selected to the All-Tournament team. He scored a career-high 27 points and now has 1,012 career points. Pecorelli and Mullins are the 33rd and 34th players in Wilkes men's basketball history to reach the 1,000 point milestone.

Wilkes improved to 4-0 overall with the victory. Montclair State dropped to 2-2 on the season. The Colonels used a terrific first half to build a lead before holding off a charge by the Red Hawks in the second half.

Mullins connected on a three to put the Colonels ahead 11-3 just 1:40 into the game. Another Mullins conversion from long range gave Wilkes its first double-digit lead at 18-6 with 14:02 left in the first half. The Colonels lead hovered around 10 until a run stretched it to 19 at 44-25 at the 2:02 mark following a Pecorelli three. At the half Wilkes led by 16 at 48-32.

Two Pecorelli makes from distance within the first minute of the second half stretched the lead to 22 points at 54-32. A Mullins jumper pushed the lead back to 22 at 60-38 with 16:40 left and Jake Robel's (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) layup at 14:11 did the same as Wilkes led 65-43. Following two free throws by Mullins the Colonels led by 18 at 79-61 with 6:41 remaining.

A Montclair State three cut the deficit to single digits as the Red Hawks only trailed by eight with 4:09 left to complete a 14-4 run. The lead dipped to four points at the 2:05 mark following another Red Hawks three. Robel responded with a clutch bucket in the paint with 48 seconds remaining to put Wilkes ahead 91-85. The Colonels then went 5-for-6 from the free throw line with Sean Coller (Hershey, PA/Hershey) making two and Nickerson DeMelfi (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) converting one. With the Wilkes lead at 94-91 it was Pecorelli that calmly nailed two free throws to seal the win and tie his career high.
