Wilkes Wrestling Competes at 87th Annual Wilkes Open
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University wrestling team hosted the 87th annual Wilkes Open on Sunday at the Marts Center compiling seven total victories on the day against high-level competition with numerous grapplers entered from NCAA Division I and Division II programs.
Thirteen wrestlers hit the mat for Wilkes on the day.

Roger Horton (Towanda, Pa./Athens) won his Round of 16 bout in the 285-pound bracket over Ryan Kaplow of Muhlenberg College with a fall in 2:09. Horton then fell to the eventual champion and No. 1 seed Seth Nevills of Penn State University in the quarterfinals. Horton's run ended one victory shy of placing top-six in the consolation round of four.
Brock Horton (Towanda, PA/Athens) at 133 and
Liam Flaherty (Needmore, PA/Southern Fulton) at 157 each advanced out of the Round of 16 with wins before falling to Penn State grapplers in the quarterfinals.
Dylan O'Connor (Somerset, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) started with a Round of 32 loss in the 141-pound bracket before defeating Adam Baker of Long Island University with a 7-4 decision in the consolation round of 16. O'Connor then won his consolation round of eight #1 bout with a 13-3 major decision over Brandon Miller of Ursinus College. O'Connor's run ended in the consolation round of eight #2 with a 7-4 decision loss to Jake Taylor of West Chester University.
John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) won his first consolation bout with a 5-3 decision but then fell in his consolation round of eight #2 bout by a tight 10-9 decision to Gary Nagle of Ursinus.
Penn State had seven champions while Lehigh University, Lock Haven University and Alderson Broaddus University had one champion each.
The Colonels will remain idle until Wednesday, January 8 when they will wrestle a dual match against Hunter College at the University of Scranton.
