Wilkes Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Just Short at Delaware Valley
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team came within four points of erasing a 19-point third quarter deficit, ultimately falling to Delaware Valley University by an 83-71 final in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action on Wednesday evening.
The Colonels fell to 4-9 in league play and 8-16 overall.
After a Delaware Valley jumper put the Aggies up 43-24 just 24 seconds into the third quarter, Wilkes battled back with a 36-22 run to trim the score to 65-60 and 7:52 on the clock after an Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) layup. Delaware Valley pushed its lead back to double-digits at 75-65 with under four minutes remaining. The Colonels went on a 6-0 run from that point on three-pointers from Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and Alfano to make the score 75-71 at the 2:13 mark, but the Aggies went 8-of-11 at the free throw line to finish the contest on an 8-0 run, sealing the game.
Delaware Valley started the game leading 14-5 after the first quarter and 41-24 at halftime before the Colonel comeback began.
Alfano led the scoring for Wilkes, totaling 20 points to go with a career-high seven assists off the bench. Gab Giordano (Moscow, PA/Holy Cross) finished with 17 points and nine rebounds for the Colonels.
Ashley Smink finished with a game-high 21 points for Delaware Valley. Danielle Skedzielewski (20 points, 11 rebounds), Lauren Moretti (14 points), and Sarah Wills (13 points) all finished in double-figures for the Aggies.
Wilkes returns to the court for its final regular season game on Saturday when it travels to FDU-Florham for a 1:00 p.m. MAC Freedom game.
