Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Skates to 1-1 Draw at Nazareth; Earns Extra UCHC Point in Shootout

ROCHESTER, NY – Brendan Logan's (Matthews, NC) third period goal earned the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team a 1-1 tie at Nazareth College in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest at the Bill Gray's Iceplex Friday night.

Wilkes earned the extra UCHC point with a shootout victory. The Colonels stand at 16-6-2 overall and 11-4-2 in the UCHC with 37 points after earning two points tonight. Wilkes will finish either second, third or fourth in the conference after tomorrow's regular season finale. Nazareth now stands at 10-7-7 overall and 7-5-5 with 27 points in the UCHC.

The Golden Flyers took an early lead with their lone goal of the night coming at the 1:10 mark of the first period when Brad Pizzey scored.

The home team held its 1-0 lead for the next 53 minutes of game-time before Logan struck for his sixth goal of the season 14:06 into the third period.

The Colonels sustained more pressure on the Golden Flyers net for the duration of the game as Wilkes held a 42-26 advantage in shots-on-goal including 9-2 in the five-minute 5-on-5 overtime period.

Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) was strong between the pipes for Wilkes as he made 25 saves in the game. His counterpart, Sean Kuhn, also played a solid game as he made 41 saves including all nine in the overtime as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie.

The game then proceeded to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period to decide how the three UCHC points on the line would be split. The period also went scoreless forcing the Colonels into their first-ever shootout. Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) and Gordon made sure things didn't last long as Barrow beat Kuhn on the Colonels first attempt and Gordon made a big save on the Golden Flyers opportunity to earn Wilkes two points in the UCHC standings.

Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ/), Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/) and Jivan Sidhu (Burnaby, BC/) finished plus-one on the night for the Navy and Gold. Barrow led Wilkes with a game-high six shots while Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ) and Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) added five.

The Colonels return to the ice Saturday night at the No. 15 ranked team in the D3hockey.com national Top 15 poll, Utica College. The 7:00 p.m. puck drop at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium will close out the regular season in the UCHC. The Colonels can earn a first-round bye in the UCHC playoffs as the No. 2 seed with a three-point victory tonight and one-point or less from Elmira College in their game against Chatham University. If that does not happen the Colonels will host a first round playoff game Tuesday at the Toyota SportsPlex as the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. If Wilkes earns at least one point tonight they would be the No. 3 seed. If the Colonels get no points tonight Manhattanville College would earn the tiebreak and push Wilkes to the No. 4 seed.
