Team Effort Leads Wilkes Men's Volleyball to Road Sweep of York NY

JAMAICA, NY – Eleven different Colonels contributed to the victory as the Wilkes University men's volleyball team swept past York College (NY) Tuesday night in a road non-conference match. The Colonels won by set scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-11.

With the victory Wilkes improved its record back to .500 at 7-7 overall. The Colonels have now swept all four matchups against the Cardinals over the past three seasons. York (NY) dropped to 1-10 overall.

After trailing 2-0 in the first set the Colonels used runs of five and four points to take a 9-3 lead. Brian Vu (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) collected a kill and service ace for the first two points while Andrew Potter (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and Jones Mensah (Philadelphia, PA/Central) capped off the five-point run. Mensah started the four-point run and Cole Hefner (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) followed with two aces. After York scored the next three points Wilkes responded with the following six to take a 15-6 lead. Mensah, Ethan Speicher (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Potter had kills during the point streak. The Colonels cruised to the finish line from there as Speicher finished the first set victory at 25-17 with a kill.

The Cardinals led early in the second set until four straight points pushed the Colonels ahead 11-9. York responded with seven of the next 10 points to take a 16-14 advantage but Wilkes had an answer. The Colonels scored the next six points on two Speicher aces, kills by Vu and Hefner and were helped by two Cardinals errors. From there Wilkes scored five of the last eight points to win 25-19. Everett Fritz (Ringtown, PA/Hazleton Area) had two of the final three kills and Potter used the block to score the final kill.

The third set started well for the Navy and Gold to the tune of a 17-5 lead. A match-high eight-point run pushed the lead for the Colonels from 6-4 to 14-4. Alberto Ramon (Allentown, PA/William Allen) had an ace during one of his seven consecutive serves. Fritz had the final two kills of the match as Wilkes finished the sweep with a 25-11 victory.

Speicher tied his career-high with eight kills to lead Wilkes. Hefner set his season-high with six kills and Potter also added six kills. Frtiz set his career-high mark of five kills and Vu had his season-high of four. Daniel Sales (Laflin, PA/James M. Coughlin) directed the offense with 32 assists.

Kyle Price (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) led the Colonels with seven digs and Joseph Gayton (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) followed with a season-high six.

The Colonels return to the court and Middle Atlantic Conference play on Thursday night when they host Eastern University at the Marts Center at 7:00 p.m.
