Wilkes Men's Volleyball Falls in Three to Misericordia
DALLAS, PA – The Wilkes University men's volleyball team dropped a three-set Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) match at Misericordia University Tuesday evening. The Cougars took the sets 25-13, 25-18, 25-18.
Wilkes fell to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference and had its three-game win streak snapped. Misericordia improved to 12-10 overall and 3-3 in the MAC.
Mark Piotrowski (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) had a strong game for the Colonels with 13 kills on 25 total attacks with three errors for a .400 hitting percentage. The freshman added eight digs.
Daniel Sales (Laflin, PA/James M. Coughlin) recorded his second double-double of the season with 22 assists and 10 digs.
The Colonels found themselves down 18-9 in the first set before stringing together their first run with three consecutive points.
Jones Mensah (Philadelphia, PA/Central),
Andrew Potter (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and Sales connected with kills to make the score 18-12. The Cougars scored seven of the next eight points to go up 1-0 with a 25-13 victory.
Wilkes tied the score at 4-4 in the second set following a kill by Piotrowski, a bad set by Misericordia and a block by Mensah and
Cole Hefner (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh). After the Cougars went ahead in the set, Piotrowski tied the score again at 12-12 with another kill. Misericordia then scored five straight to take control of the set eventually winning 25-18 to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
In the third set Mensah put away a kill to give Wilkes a 5-4 lead but Misericordia went on a 12-5 run to take a 16-10 lead. Back-to-back kills by Piotrowski and Hefner pulled the Colonels within four points at 21-17 but the Cougars were able to complete the sweep at a 25-18 score.
The Colonels will look to get back to the win column in conference play when they travel to Grantham, Pa. to take on Messiah College Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
