Wilkes Women's Tennis Blanks Muhlenberg 9-0
ALLENTOWN, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team posted a 9-0 shutout victory over host Muhlenberg College Saturday afternoon at Kern Field Courts.
Wilkes improved to 5-2 overall following the dual match win while Muhlenberg fell to 1-6 overall after the home loss.
Wilkes raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles thanks to wins from all three pairs. At No. 1
Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and
Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) went 8-2 for the win.
Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) and
Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) took an 8-2 victory at No. 2 while
Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) and
Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) posted an 8-0 win at No. 3.
Wilkes took all six singles flights in straight sets to clinch the sweep. Vasarkovy, Yakhnis and Zielinski all were winners in No. 1 through No. 3 respectively.
Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4,
Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Markle 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Wilkes is back in action Saturday with its spring home debut against Franklin and Marshall College at 1:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
