Freshmen Myers and Weaver Lead Wilkes Men's Lacrosse to Victory at Alvernia

READING, PA – Freshmen Alex Myers (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Ethan Weaver (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake) enjoyed career nights as the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team defeated Alvernia University 17-11 on the road Wednesday night in non-conference action. Myers led the Colonels with a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists while Weaver also registered a career-high six points on one goal and five assists.

Eight other Colonels got into the scoring column as Wilkes improved to 4-3 on the season. Alvernia fell to 3-4 with the home loss.

The Golden Wolves scored three of the first four goals in the first quarter to lead 3-1 with 8:12 showing on the clock. From there Wilkes scored four in a row to end the first quarter ahead 5-3. John Wink (Glenside, PA/Abington) scored the first goal off an assist from Weaver and then Connor Daly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.), Eric Ormsby (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and Andrew Moynihan (Easton, MA/Lawrence Academy) notched unassisted strikes. Moynihan's tally was the freshman's first career goal. Myers capped off the first quarter scoring off an assist from Luke Palladino (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) for his first goal of the game.

Wilkes then continued its scoring run by outscoring Alvernia 5-0 in the second quarter to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. The 9-0 run in total was the turning point in the contest. Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) scored the first goal for the Colonels in the second quarter off an assist from Weaver at the 11:10 mark. Palladino followed with a man-up goal off a pass from Ormsby and then Weaver tallied a goal from Lorenzo. Wink's 32nd of the season made it 9-3 off a pass from Myers and then Myers capped the scoring with an unassisted goal.

Alvernia scored to open the third quarter but then Wilkes answered with four-straight goals to take its largest lead of the game at 14-4 with 8:16 remaining in the third. Daly scored on the man-up as Weaver had the assist and then Ormsby scored from Myers. Palladino netted another from Weaver and then Myers scored on the man-down off a pass from JT Weitzel (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll).

Alvernia would outscore Wilkes 7-3 the rest of the way but the Colonels lead never dipped below five goals. Myers scored two more and Daly finished the scoring for Wilkes at the 3:41 mark of the fourth.

Daly (3 goals), Palladino (2 goals, 1 assist) and Ormsby (2 goals, 1 assist) all finished with three points. Joseph Papa (Edison, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen) led Wilkes with four ground balls and Moynihan was strong on faceoffs as he won 19-of-27 in the game.

Daniel Cox (Stratford, CT/Stratford) played the first three quarters in net and made a career-high 10 saves for the Colonels to earn his second victory of the season. Fellow freshman goalkeeper Anthony Scafuro (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Regional) played the final quarter.

Andrew Ritchie led Alvernia with five points on four goals and one assist.

The Colonels held a 54-33 shots advantage and 33-22 shots-on-goal edge. Wilkes was 13-of-18 on clearing chances while Alvernia was 13-of-20. Wilkes also led in ground balls 31-25 and went 2-for-2 on extra man opportunities while Alvernia went 0-for-4.

Wilkes returns to Schmidt Stadium to host Wells College on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. in another non-conference tilt.
