Six-Goal Outburst Propels Wilkes Women's Lacrosse to Comeback Win against Medaille

EDWARDSVILLE – Trailing by three goals in the second half, the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team used a 6-0 run to take an 11-8 lead on its way to defeating Medaille College 14-12 in a non-conference contest Sunday at Schmidt Stadium.

With the victory the Colonels improved to 5-2 this season and 3-0 at home while Medaille dropped to 4-2.

Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the first half and Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) added a second goal for the Colonels at the 28:22 mark. The Mavericks then answered with three goals to take their first lead with 15:30 showing on the clock.

Kyra Boccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) then evened the score at 3-3 with a man-down goal at the 11:37 mark. After a Medaille goal, Boccio scored again with just under six minutes left in the first half but the Mavericks scored the final two tallies to take a 6-4 lead into the break.

Lerch scored off an assist from Burkhardt to open the second half scoring just 45 seconds in as Wilkes closed to within one at 6-5. The road side then scored the next two to open its largest lead of the game at 8-5.

The Colonels comeback began on the man-up when Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) scored with 21:47 left in the game. Boccio then scored her third of the game and second on the man-down to pull Wilkes within one at 8-7. Delaney Lukowski (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) then scored on a free position shot for the defender's first goal of the season to tie the score at the at the 14:47 mark. Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI/Tilton) then notched her third goal of the year to put Wilkes ahead 9-8 with 12:15 left. Boccio and Lerch followed by capping the six-goal outburst to give the Colonels an 11-8 edge with 8:43 remaining.

Medaille scored to end the Colonels goal streak but Devitt answered and Burkhardt scored on a free position chance to extend the Wilkes lead to its largest of the game at 13-9 with just 4:31 left. The goal also stood as the game-winner for Burkhardt for her second of the season. Boccio's fifth of the game and 28th of the season came on a free position shot to keep Wilkes up four at 14-10. Two late Medaille goals were not enough as Wilkes remained perfect at home with the 14-12 win.

In addition to leading the team in goals and points, Boccio also led Wilkes with five ground balls. Lerch filled the stat sheet with four points on three goals and one assist while also picking up four ground balls and winning a game-high eight draw controls. Burkhardt finished with three points on two goals and one assist.

Alexis Ackerson scored a game-high six goals for Medaille.

Wilkes held leads in ground balls (28-23) and draw controls (17-11) as the two teams played a back-and-forth affair with each team registering 24 shots while the Colonels put 21 on goal compared to 20 for the Mavericks.

Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) earned her fifth win of the season with eight saves for the Colonels.

Wilkes will remain home for its next contest when it hosts Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. for a non-conference game at Schmidt Stadium.
