Durnin's Strong Start Leads Wilkes Baseball over Eastern 8-2
ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – Noah Durnin (Bath, PA/Northampton) provided the Wilkes University baseball team with a sterling performance against Eastern University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action on Wednesday afternoon, tossing seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and five strikeout as the Colonels earned an 8-2 victory.
Wilkes improved to 3-3 in conference and 6-10 overall.
The Colonels got on the board in the top of the first when Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) doubled down the left field line to score Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) after Fischer singled and Capozzi walked with both runners moving up a base on a wild pitch to open a 2-0 lead.
Eastern cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
Fischer knocked the 100th hit of his career in the top of the fourth with a single to left that brought home Vinny Bobbin (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Eagles again cut the advantage to one with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Wilkes scored two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from Fischer and a run-scoring single from Reno to increase the lead to 5-2. Reno hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth, followed later by a two-run single from Jonah Harder (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) to reach the final score.
Fischer finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI's. Reno finished 3-for-5 with four RBI's while Charles Giacometti Jr. (Dallas, PA/Dallas), Harder, and Bobbin added one hit each.
Zack Metz (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) and Andrew Indzonka (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched the final two innings for the Colonels.
Wilkes returns to action on Friday when it will host DeSales University for a MAC Freedom single game at 3:30 p.m.
