Wink and Palladino's Career Days Power Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Past Mount Saint Mary 21-7
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Wilkes University's
John Wink (Glenside, PA/Abington) and
Luke Palladino (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) combined for 10 goals and 10 assists both setting career-highs to power the Colonels past host Mount Saint Mary College 21-7 Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field.
Wilkes pushed its win streak to three games improving to 6-3 overall on the season. Mount Saint Mary dropped to 3-7 overall on the year following the home defeat.
The 21 goals marks the second consecutive game where the Colonels scored 20-plus goals in a win and the third time in program history.
Mount Saint Mary started the game in control scoring the first three goals of the contest to take a 3-0 lead with 7:04 left in the first quarter. Wink took a pass from Palladino and notched the Colonels first goal of the game at the 2:16 mark of the opening stanza before
Alex Myers (Cortland, NY/Cortland) scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 3-2 with :36 remaining. After a Mount Saint Mary goal :12 later,
Matthew Bush (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) rounded out the first quarter scoring with a strike off a pass from Wink with :08 left on the clock and the Colonels trailing 4-3.
Bush's goal to end the first quarter began a 6-0 run from the Colonels as Palladino scored twice and Wink twice, the second being on the man-advantage, to give Wilkes an 8-4 lead.
The teams traded goals to end the second quarter sending the Colonels to the break with a 9-5 lead.
The third quarter proved to be all Wilkes as the Colonels outscored the hosts 6-0 in the frame taking a commanding 15-5 lead into the final quarter. Wink and Palladino traded two goals each and
Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) and
Connor Daly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) notched goals in the frame, with Daly's being the Colonels second strike on the man-advantage. Palladino closed out the third with his fifth goal of the contest thanks to a helper from Wink.
Daly added two more goals and Bush,
Kyle Sokol (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) and
Gavin Scofield (Stratford, CT/Stratford) closed out the scoring in the final quarter for the Colonels. Palladino and
Jack Moyer (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) picked up assists on the final two goals.
Wink finished with a career-best 12 points on five goals and seven assists while Palladino followed with his best performance of the year finishing with eight points on five goals and three helpers. Daly added three goals and an assist while Lorenzo notched one strike and two assists.
Carter Whittemore (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) played all but five minutes in net for Wilkes posting the victory finishing with 15 saves.
Daniel Cox (Stratford, CT/Stratford) entered in relief for the final 5:08 making one stop.
Wilkes was efficient clearing the ball out of its defensive zone good on 24-of-27 clearing attempts. The Colonels also won 20-of-31 faceoff attempts thanks to
Andrew Moynihan's (Easton, MA/Lawrence Academy) 19-of-28 performance in the circle.
Wilkes begins MAC Freedom play Wednesday when the Colonels travel cross-town for a matchup with rival King's College at 7:00 p.m.
