Cabry's Game One Performance Helps Wilkes Softball to Split with Stockton

EDWARDSVILLE – Erin Cabry (York, PA/Central York) drove in four of the teams eight game one runs as the Wilkes University softball team split a Sunday non-conference doubleheader with Stockton University, taking game one 8-2 before falling 4-2 in the second game from the Ralston Athletic Complex.

The Colonels are now 15-8 on the season, with the game two loss snapping a nine-game win streak.

The Colonels piled it on in the bottom of the first of game one, crossing the plate five times and forcing the Ospreys starting pitcher from the game after just two outs. Emma Stauffer (Media, PA/Penncrest) started the scoring with a bases loaded two-out walk scoring Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) after Gibson originally reached base on a fielder's choice error. Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) followed with a two-run double over the left fielders head scoring Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance), who singled, and Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove), while Cabry finished the scoring in the inning with a two-run single up the middle that brought home Stauffer and Staunton.

Stockton responded in the top of the second with two two-out runs to cut the advantage to 5-2.

Wilkes added on with runs in the bottom of the third. Cabry came up big again bringing in two runs with a single up the middle that scored Jaime Martin (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional), who pinch-ran for Brown after she lead off the inning with a single and moved to second as her hit went through the center fielder's legs along with Madison Ensley (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), who pinch-ran for Stauffer after she reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Gibson brought home the Colonels eighth run with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Staunton, who earned a walk in her at-bat.

Staunton improved to 6-3 in the circle with the win, going the distance allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Gab Giordano (Moscow, PA/Holy Cross) (2-3), Brown (2-4, one run), and Cabry (2-3, four RBI) led the way at the plate in game one for Wilkes.

The Ospreys loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first of game two, but Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton), the starter in the circle, earned a strikeout and a groundout to escape the jam.

After shutting down the scoring opportunity, Giordano started the Wilkes half of the first by launching a leadoff home run to left putting the Colonels up 1-0.

Stockton tied the score in the top of the third on one hit and one Wilkes error.

The Colonels retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Brown that scored Jumalon, who reached on a double to left leading off the inning and moved to third on Rhiannon Aurand (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove)'s first career hit.

Stockton took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Wilkes loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and two outs but it was unable to push across any more runs.

Aurand suffered the defeat in the second game, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Eight different Colonels had at least one hit at the plate.

Wilkes returns to the field on Wednesday when it will travel to the University of Scranton for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
