Wilkes Women's Tennis Battles in Loss to Warner University

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Wilkes University women's tennis team fought until the end before suffering its first loss of the season (3-1) with a 6-1 loss to Warner University (FL) on Wednesday afternoon.

In the doubles portion, #2 Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) and Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) had a tough time as they fell behind 0-7. They would battle to pick up a game before ultimately falling 1-8.

The #3 pairing of Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) rallied from down 2-3 to take a 5-4 lead, however the Royals countered with four straight games of their own to win 8-5.

In #1 doubles, Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) battled all match long as they trailed 1-4 before cutting the deficit to just one game at 4-5. The duo would take the lead at 6-5 but Warner responded to force a breaker at 7-7. This one would belong to the Royals as they won the breaker 7-4 to defeat the Colonels 8-7 (7-4) and head into singles play up 3-0.

Wilkes dropped their first singles match as #3 Zielinski lost 1-6, 1-6 before #6 Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) got the navy and gold on the board with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

After #1 Vasarkovy fell 2-6, 2-6, the Royals were the first to five and clinched a victory at 5-1. #4 Yakhnis would follow with a 2-6, 5-7 defeat.

Due to time the #2 Varela-Seri (5-7, 2-5) and #5 Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) (2-6, 3-4) matches were left unfinished as Warner had already clinched the match 6-1.

The Colonels close out their spring break trip tomorrow with a dual match against Methodist University (8:30 a.m.) and Missouri Valley College (3:30 p.m.).
