No. 22 Randolph-Macon Sweeps Doubleheader over Wilkes Softball

ASHLAND, VA – The Wilkes University softball team faced off in a road doubleheader with No. 22 Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games to end the Colonels five-game winning streak. The Yellow Jackets took game one 5-0 and then won game two 10-0 in five innings.

Wilkes is now 5-4 overall this season while Randolph-Macon improved to 7-2.

Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) was charged with trying to keep the Yellow Jackets offense pinned down in game one for the Colonels but Randolph-Macon scored unearned runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance) recorded the first hit for Wilkes in the top of the fourth inning with a single to left field but she was stranded. A three-run triple for Randolph-Macon in the bottom of the inning pushed the home lead to 5-0.

Haley Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) singled to lead off the sixth and Jumalon collected her second hit of the game to lead off the seventh but Wilkes was unable to bring its baserunners home.

Staunton (1-2) pitched all six innings allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks. She struck out one batter and worked three scoreless innings.

Randolph-Macon jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a sacrifice fly and three run-scoring doubles in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Caylee-Mae Williams (Yuba City, CA/River Valley) and Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) reached on hit-by-pitches in the top of the second for Wilkes but were stranded on base.

The Yellow Jackets added six runs on six hits and one error in the bottom of the second to go ahead 10-0 after two full innings.

Williams singled down the left field line to record the Colonels first hit in the top of the fourth. Wilkes then threatened for runs in the fifth inning as Emma Stauffer (Media, PA/Penncrest) lead off with a pinch-hit single up the middle. Erin Cabry (York, PA/Central York) then doubled and Lauren Leppo (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) reached on an error as Wilkes loaded the bases with no outs. Randolph-Macon was able to retire the next three hitters on a pop out, line out and groundout to end the game.

Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) (2-2) took the loss as she went 1.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits. Rhiannon Aurand (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. She worked scoreless frames in the third and fourth innings.

The Colonels will stay in Virginia to close out their Spring Break Trip with a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite University tomorrow (Sunday) starting at 12:00 p.m.
