Reno’s Hot Bat Carries Wilkes Baseball Over Marywood 13-5

Reno's Hot Bat Carries Wilkes Baseball Over Marywood 13-5

KINGSTON – Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) finished 4-for-4 with three doubles, a homerun and four RBI's to carry the Wilkes University baseball team to a 13-5 victory over visiting Marywood University Tuesday afternoon at Artillery Park.

The Colonels move to 8-12 overall following the home win while Marywood dropped to 4-14 overall on the year.

Wilkes opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) took first base after being hit by a pitch. Reno followed with his first double of the game moving Capozzi to third before Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) brought both runners home on a two-run single to right centerfield giving the Colonels a 2-0 lead.

After Marywood answered back tying the game in the top half of the second, the Colonels bats went back to work in the bottom half of the frame scoring five runs on three hits and two Pacers errors to take back a 7-2 advantage. Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) plated the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton). Reno then connected on his second double of the game scoring two more Colonels on the hit upping the lead to 5-2. Following a groundout for the second out of the frame, Bryan Nifenecker (Amityville, NY/St. Dominic) singled up the middle plating the final two runs of the inning and giving Wilkes a 7-2 lead.

Wilkes added to its lead in the third after Reinert walked and came around to score on a Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) triple to right centerfield.  Reno continued his fine hitting in the game in the bottom of the fourth drilling a solo home run over the blue wall in left field to push the advantage to 9-2 after four.

Wilkes added three more insurance runs in the fifth as Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) began the frame with a double to leftfield. After a Patrizio single to second base, Gonzalez tagged up on another Fischer sacrifice fly to make it 10-2 Colonels. Capozzi followed with an RBI double and Reno finished off his perfect day with his third RBI double of the game scoring Capozzi as Wilkes led 12-2 after five.

The Colonels scored one final run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a Marywood pitchers' wild pitch that scored Jack Hines (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) from third.

Joining Reno with multiple hits was Patrizio who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Fischer, Nifenecker and Malatesta each added two RBI's.

Wilkes received an outstanding pitching performance from starter Tony Molitoris (Hanover Twp., PA/Holy Redeemer) who went 5.1 innings allowing just five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts to record his second collegiate victory and first on the mound for Wilkes.

Wilkes is back in action tomorrow hosting Cabrini for a 3:30 p.m. nine-inning contest.
