Wilkes Baseball Pounds Out 15 Hits in Win over Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball team pounded out 15 hits, led by Nicholas Capozzi's (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) 4-for-5 showing, in its 5-3 non-conference win over Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Colonels improved to 14-18 with the win.

Wilkes started the scoring in the top of the first when Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) lined a one-out double to right-center and came in to score one batter later on Capozzi's single to center.

The Colonels added a second run in the top of the second when Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) led off with a single, moved to second on Nick Malatesta's (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on groundout to the right side, and scored on an infield single off the bat of Vinny Bobbin (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain).

The score increased to 3-0 in the top of the third on an RBI double from Capozzi that scored Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), who singled to start the inning and stole second.

Lebanon Valley cut the advantage to 3-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth.

Wilkes increased its lead in the top of the fifth with two more runs. Fischer started the inning with a single to left-center and moved to third on a double off the bat of Capozzi. After a fly out, Reinert grounded out to score Fishcer and move Capozzi up before Malatesta singled to score Capozzi.

The Dutchmen added a run each in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the ninth.

In addition to his four hits, Capozzi added one run scored and two RBI's to pace the offense. Patrizio (2-5, one run), Fischer (2-5, two runs), and Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (2-4) each finished with two hits.

Tony Molitoris (Hanover Twp., PA/Holy Redeemer) improved to 3-1, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts over five innings. Nolan Ott (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville Area) pitched three scoreless innings while Andrew Indzonka (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) earned his sixth save of the season, allowing one unearned run in the ninth.

The Colonels return to the field on Thursday when they will travel to Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Freedom game.
