Wilkes Women's Tennis Locks Up Playoff Spot
WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team blanked rival King's College 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 5-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) on their way to clinching a playoff spot in the postseason tournament.
The Colonels now stand at 11-3 overall.
Doubles play began with a win in the #3 spot as Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) cruised to an 8-1 win. That victory was followed by an 8-1 triumph by #1 Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona). The navy and gold finished the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win by Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) at #2 doubles.
Singles play started with a pair a 6-1, 6-1 Colonels wins in the #6 and #3 spots by Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and Yakhnis respectively, to clinch the victory for Wilkes.
#5 Zielinski kept up her consistent play by taking her match in 6-0, 6-2 fashion before #2 Varela-Seri closed out a 6-0, 6-1 affair.
#4 Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) continued her successful return from an early season injury with a 6-1, 6-3 victory before #1 Vasarkovy grinded out a 6-4, 6-3 win to end the match.
Wilkes returns to the courts tomorrow when it heads to Bloomsburg to take on the Division II Huskies at 5:00 p.m.
