EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting King's College jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the break and held on despite a late Wilkes University rally to post a 14-7 MAC Freedom victory over the Colonels Wednesday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.
 
Wilkes fell to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in league games while King's improved to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in conference contests.
 
King's opened the game scoring the first three goals taking a 3-0 lead with 22:31 left in the first half. The Colonels responded over the next three minutes as Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) scored off a free position and Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) notched her 22nd strike of the season to cut the Monarch advantage to 3-2.
 
King's answered back with four straight goals over the final 17 minutes to take a 7-2 lead into the halftime break.
 
Burkhardt added her second goal of the game three minutes into the second half to cut the King's advantage to 7-3. After a King's goal seven minutes later, Burkhardt completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal then notched her fourth of the game to bring Wilkes to within three at 8-5 with 14:48 remaining.
 
King's went back to the offensive again scoring back-to-back goals before Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) notched her 14th goal of the season to trim the lead to 10-6. Devitt added her second goal of the contest bringing Wilkes to within three at 10-7 with 8:19 remaining.
 
From there King's used four straight goals over the next four minutes to seal the MAC Freedom victory.
 
Burkhardt finished with four goals while Devitt followed with two and Duman one to round out the Wilkes scoring.
 
Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) finished with a season-high 20 saves in net for Wilkes.
 
Wilkes continues MAC Freedom play Saturday with another home matchup against Manhattanville College starting at 1:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
