Wilkes Women's Tennis Falls in NCAA Tournament First Round Against #37 TCNJ
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as the Colonels fell 5-0 to No. 37 The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Friday morning at the outdoor courts on the campus of Mary Washington University.
Wilkes closed its 2018-19 season with a 15-5 overall record. TCNJ improved to 16-4 overall and advanced to play Amherst College on Saturday in round two action.
TCNJ raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play thanks to an 8-3 win at No. 1 and 8-6 victory at No. 2 pairs. The duo of
Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) and
Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) held a 7-6 lead late in their No. 3 doubles match but TCNJ answered back taking the final two points including the tie-breaker for an 8-7 win.
TCNJ closed the match out with singles wins at No. 4 and No. 5 to clinch the victory. At No. 1,
Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) took her first set 6-3 before the match was halted.
Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) evened her match at No. 3 singles winning 6-2 in the second set prior to a 6-1 setback in the first set before the match was finished.
