Wilkes Field Hockey Drops Championship Game to No. 7 Salisbury 4-1

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Wilkes University field hockey team fell by a 4-1 score to No. 7 Salisbury University in the Connie Harnum Classic Championship Game on Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna University. Freshman Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored her first collegiate goal in the game.

The Colonels were in the championship game of the tournament for the first time since 2015 after yesterday's overtime win against host Susquehanna. The game also marked Wilkes' first meeting with the nationally ranked Sea Gulls since the 2014 season.

With the loss the Colonels dropped to 1-1 on the young season and Salisbury improved to 2-0.

Murphy's goal came just 56 seconds into the third quarter following a penalty corner taken by Julia Kiss (Bangor, PA/Bangor). Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) then found Murphy to make the score 3-1 for the tenth assist of the junior's career.

The Sea Gulls opened the scoring 9:43 into the first quarter and two more second quarter goals gave Salisbury a 3-0 halftime lead. Salisbury capped the scoring two minutes after Murphy's goal in the third quarter.

Freshman Vanessa Damgaard (Elysburg, PA/Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical School) made 10 saves for the Colonels in her second collegiate start. Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail), the overtime hero from Friday, led the Wilkes offense with two shots in the game.

The Colonels will open the home portion of the 2019 schedule on Wednesday when they host Keystone College at 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
