Murphy's Five-Point Game Leads Wilkes Field Hockey Past Cedar Crest
ALLENTOWN, PA – Freshman
Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) recorded a five-point game to lead the Wilkes University field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Cedar Crest College Wednesday evening at the FalconPlex in Allentown, Pa.
Wilkes improved to 3-2 overall this season with the road victory while Cedar Crest dropped to 0-5.
The Colonels pressured the Falcons cage from the outset and on their fifth shot found their first goal thanks to Murphy.
Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) played a penalty corner to
Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) who then found Murphy with the assist for the goal at the 7:56 mark.
Wilkes added to its lead in the second quarter when senior
Julia Kiss (Bangor, PA/Bangor) scored her first career goal off a pass from Murphy in the 20th minute.
Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) then stretch the Colonels lead to 3-0 at the 29:41 mark with an unassisted goal.
The home side made a push in the third quarter to get back in the game. Kiley Marone scored first in the 37th minute and then Amber Cieri scored off an assist from Brice Gardner in the 45th minute.
Murphy gave the Colonels some breathing room in the fourth quarter at the 53:13 mark when she tallied her second goal of the game, again assisted by Baldwin.
Vanessa Damgaard (Elysburg, PA/Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical School) then made two saves in the final minutes to help preserve the 4-2 victory.
The Colonels offense was led by Murphy with six shots, five on goal that resulted in two goals and she also assisted once. Kiss added four shots with three on goal. Wilkes outshot Cedar Crest 25-11 for the game and also held an 18-10 advantage in penalty corners.
Damgaard made six saves to pick up the victory while Cassandra Reijgers made 15 saves for the Falcons.
The Colonels return to the field on Saturday to host Alvernia University at Schmidt Stadium. The non-conference contest is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
