Wilkes Women's Soccer Controls Marywood in 4-0 Victory
SCRANTON, PA – Four different players scored as the Wilkes University women's soccer team took to the road to defeat Marywood University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon by a 4-0 score. The four goals were the highest scoring output by the Colonels this season.
Wilkes improved to 3-4-1 with the victory while Marywood dropped to 2-6-0. With the victory the Colonels stayed unbeaten against Marywood since 2008 with a 7-0-1 record.
The Colonels peppered the net early in the game and were rewarded for their efforts at the 8:22 mark as
Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) scored her second goal of the season.
Emily Bidelspach (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) assisted on the play as she played the ball back to the center of the box where Evans then shot the ball off the far post and in for the 1-0 lead.
The Pacers were able to start to generate more offense but neither side could find the net for the remainder of the first half. Wilkes held a 12-4 shots advantage and an 8-4 lead in corner kicks after the first 45 minutes of play.
It didn't take long for Wilkes to add to its lead in the second half as Bidelspach connected for her team-high fourth goal of the season in the 51st minute.
Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) picked up her team-leading third assist of the year on the play as she centered the ball to Bidelspach who was waiting from 5-yards outs.
Marywood committed a foul in the box at the 66:29 mark and
Karyna Vargas (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) took advantage with a penalty kick goal to make it 3-0.
Kailee Harwick (Souderton, PA/Souderton) then added the final goal in the 84th minute for the freshman's first career goal.
Alizabeth McKeever (Dover, PA/Dover) played a low cross into the box for the assist on the play.
Evans and
Delfina Bracchi (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) led the Colonels offense with five shots each. Wilkes outshot Marywood 11-0 in the second half and 23-4 for the game.
Kendall Koch (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills) earned her first career victory as the senior played the first half in goal for the Colonels and made one save.
Mikayla Ronczka (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) played the final 45 minutes to combine with Koch and the Wilkes defense for the shutout.
Wilkes will open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play on Saturday, October 5 and also play its inaugural game at the new Bruggeworth Field. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. on Homecoming weekend.
