Wilkes Women's Soccer Plays Ithaca to Scoreless Draw
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team put forth an exceptional defensive effort against an Ithaca College team that was receiving votes in the first edition of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, as the two teams played to a 0-0 tie from Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Colonels remain undefeated and are now 1-0-1 on the 2019 season.
Both teams raced out of the gate quick offensively with Wilkes earning a corner kick 42 seconds into the game. Emily Bidelspach (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) was able to get a head on the ball played in by Kiana Jedlicka (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), however Bombers goalkeeper Sara Jakobsze was there to turn it away.
After a Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) shot went wide right, Ithaca gained three shots and two corner kicks. In the 26th minute, the Bombers put forth a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced out-of-bounds.
Ithaca finished the half with 11 shots compared to four for the Colonels, but neither team was able to find the back of the net with the score remaining tied at zero.
The second half was a story of neutral zone play, as neither team was able to consistently generate offensive pressure, with Wilkes gaining the only four shots of the half keeping the score locked at zeroes at the end of regular time.
The Bombers had the only shot of the first overtime in the 94th minute which was turned away by goalkeeper Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia). It was much of the same in the second overtime with the Bombers getting two shots while the Colonels had zero, locking in the tie for each team.
Cecere made four saves in goal for Wilkes.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday when they will host the Rochester Institute of Technology for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game.
