Wilkes Women's Volleyball Aces Lead to Pair of Victories
CHAMBERSBURG, PA. -- The Wilkes University women's volleyball team hit the road for a pair of non-conference matches Saturday afternoon, bouncing back from their losses earlier in the week with two victories.
The Colonels (4-4) took down Albright 25-16, 25-14, 25-11 in the early match before toppling host Wilson 25-14, 27-25, 24-26, 25-20 to sweep both matches on the day.
In the early match, the Colonels jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first set thanks to five service aces and clinched the set off of the strength of a late 5-1 run. The first set would set the tone for the remaining two sets, with the Colonels never letting Albright within striking distance.
The Colonels aces would prove to be a key factor, with junior defensive specialist
Kristie Najdek (Bethpage, NY/Island Trees) and sophomore setter
Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) notching five aces each, while senior opposite hitter
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) added in four of her own. Mikovich would add 11 kills to her aces, while Huffman pitched in with a team-leading 24 assists as well.
As a team, the Colonels had 17 aces to Albright's three.
The host Wilson Phoenix would prove to be the toughest test of either match on the evening. Wilkes would dominate the first set, however, with a 9-1 run late in the set being the nail in the coffin for the host Phoenix. The teams would trade runs throughout the second set. Wilson replied with a 6-1 run to start the second set, while Wilkes answered back with an 8-1 run of their own. The Phoenix were not one to stay down, and struck back with an 11-2 run of their own.
Wilkes would claim a 21-20 edge late in the set off of a 10-2 run. The teams would trade points through the remainder of the set, with kills from Huffman and Mikovich finishing the hectic set in favor of the colonels 27-25. The Phoenix would respond by claiming the back and forth third set off of a set-ending 7-2 run.
The Colonels would not be denied their victory and clamped down on the fourth set with an 8-3 run to go home victorious in both matches.
Mikovich had a strong second match as well, leading the Colonels in both kills and aces with 18 and seven respectively. She posted 11 digs as well. Huffman posted 38 assists for the evening's match, her season high so far. Senior defensive specialist
Julie Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) led all Colonels with 12 digs in the second match.
The Colonels led the host Phoenix in aces 15-8 to cap off the day.
Wilkes will return to the Marts Center Tuesday to face off against the Keystone Giants at 7:00 p.m. The Colonels defeated the Giants last year in La Plume, Pa. 3-1 and lead the series since 2009 7-4.
