Elizabethtown Sweeps Wilkes Men's Volleyball

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – Host Elizabethtown College swept past the Wilkes University men's volleyball team 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-13) Thursday night in a non-conference match.

With the loss Wilkes dropped to 1-1 on the season while Elizabethtown improved its record to 2-1.

Cole Hefner (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) led the Colonels on a tough offensive night with four kills. Joseph Gayton (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) paced the Wilkes backrow defense with six digs while Ethan Speicher (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) led at the net with three blocks. Zach Shay (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) had 11 assists on the night.

The Blue Jays and Colonels matched points early in the first set with the score standing at 5-5. The hosts then went on a 10-2 run to open a 15-7 lead. The Colonels put together four-straight points including a kill by Hefner to make the score 23-17 before the Blue Jays closed out the set with the final two points to win 25-17.

Elizabethtown then raced out to a 13-3 advantage in the second set. Wilkes put together a 5-2 run in the middle of the set but it was not enough as the home side went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-13 victory.

A 10-3 start to the third set put the Blue Jays in a strong position to earn the sweep. Wilkes struggled to make any headway into the lead and fell by another 25-13 score.

Nick Baxter led Elizabethtown with 16 kills while Steve Swain had 10 digs.

The Colonels will participate in their first tri-match of the 2020 season Saturday when they host Purchase College at 11:00 a.m. and the City College of New York at 3:00 p.m. in the Marts Center. Wilkes is 2-0 all-time against Purchase and 4-0 against CCNY.
