Pecorelli's 32 Points Propels Wilkes Men's Basketball to 76-65 Win at Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, PA – Senior Rob Pecorelli's (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) game-high 32 points helped the Wilkes University men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid as the Colonels earned a 76-65 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory at Delaware Valley University Wednesday evening.

Wilkes is now 9-9 overall and 2-5 in the MAC Freedom at the midway point of the conference season. Delaware Valley dropped to 5-12 overall and 1-6 in the league.

Sophomore Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) contributed a career-high 15 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field and also a career-high six assists. Fellow sophomore Jake Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) finished with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and had two late game steals to help the Colonels extend their lead.

Marshall provided Wilkes its first lead of the game when he connected from deep giving the Colonels a 5-3 lead at the 17:19 mark of the first half. The Aggies countered with their own three to regain the lead on the next possession which started a 10-2 run to open a six point lead by the 13:43 mark.

Pecorelli hit his first three of the game to stop the run of the home team. Mark Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) later made a layup off an assist from Robel to push the Colonels back ahead at 18-16 with 9:36 left until halftime. From there Wilkes closed on a 20-13 run to end the half leading 38-29. Pecorelli scored 13 points during the stretch including three makes from behind the arc to end the first half with 20 points.

Another trey for Pecorelli gave the Colonels their first double-digit lead of the game just 21 seconds into the second half at 41-31. Wilkes later used an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of 15 points at 51-36 with 15:38 left in the second half. Marshall scored on a layup and then hit a three and Pecorelli nailed his final of six three-pointers for the scoring in the run.

Wilkes still led by 13 at 57-44 with 9:48 left following a layup by Derek Heiserman (Lansdale, PA/North Penn). The Aggies then chipped away at the Colonels lead with an extended 19-11 run to cut the deficit to just five at 68-63 with 3:40 on the clock.

Robel then made a layup off a Marshall assist and followed the basket with a steal on the next DelVal possession. After a Wilkes timeout Robel scored again down low, this time assisted by Mullins as the Colonels lead grew back to nine with 1:12 remaining. Robel again came away with a steal on the next possession for the Aggies and Marshall made two free-throws after being fouled to helped seal the game.

Pecorelli's six threes moved him into eighth place on the Wilkes all-time three-point list with 187 conversions from distance. He added a game-high nine rebounds to his line that also included going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. His 32 points were one shy of his career-best effort.

Jordan Tucker led Delaware Valley with 26 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. The Wilkes defense held the MAC Freedom scoring leader, Damian Washington, to 14 points and 3-of-11 shooting. Dwayne Caine Jr. rounded out the Aggies in double figures with 12 points.

Wilkes begins the second half of MAC Freedom play on Saturday hosting Eastern at the Marts Center on Hall of Fame Day. The game will tip at approximately 2:00 p.m.
